Investing in CLABSI Prevention Paying Off

Posted on by Ryan Bauhs

Since the 1960’s the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been investing heavily in the understand and prevention of central line-associated bloodstream infections.  That investment has paid dividends, based on the findings in a study from Health Affairs (http://content.healthaffairs.org/content/33/6/1040.abstract).

All medical facilities should follow the lead of the CDC and invest in programs and strategies to reduce and even eliminate CLABSIs.  In an article from Becker’s Healthcare website, the implementation of these types of programs can actually lead to a reduction in costs,”These findings suggest that investments in CDC programs targeting other healthcare-associated infections also have the potential to produce savings by lowering Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements.”(http://www.beckershospitalreview.com/quality/cdc-investments-in-clabsi-prevention-produce-substantial-benefits.html)
