AVA 2016

Posted on by Mary Smith

What a great 2016 meeting!  AVA celebrated 30 years with a celebration Gala friday evening.  Thank you AVA for an enjoyable evening.

What did I take away from the scientific meeting?  Just a few quick thoughts, there are many more but can’t keep you here all day!.   I will post more information and links to great resources in the weeks to come.

  1.  Vascular access specialists, vascular access programs, vascular access teams are key to improving the patients experience.  We need to understand all devices and do a complete assessment of our patients before we decide what device should be placed.  We should no longer just place a PICC because that is what was ordered.
  2. Tools like  “Magic”  give us an algorithm to help guide the decision.
  3. Midline catheters ARE another tool in the toolbox.
  4. We are becoming a voice to be heard.  Become the expert, review the literature, know the evidence and share it wit our colleagues.
  5. Collect data when you make a change in your process.  If you go clinically indicated then start collecting the data.  This will be so important to you and your quest for process improvement.
  6. JOIN AVA!  If you are not a member you are missing out on learning from the leaders in the industry.  This was again another great meeting and I am “hooked”  as another network leader said.
