Create a Vascular Access Team in 2013

Posted on by Mary Smith

We all set personal goals for ourselves, but this year we should also look at our professional goals.  Creating a Vascular Access Team can improve patient care and satisfaction scores for our hospitals.  Having a team of experts to consult and utilize all hours of the day is a service that is becoming more valuable.  More and more central lines are being placed everyday in many different settings.  Years ago we placed CVC catheters in the ED and ICU mainly.  Now lines are being placed on Medical Surgical floors, Ambulatory Infusion centers and Outpatient Infusion Centers.  Patients are showing up to our facilities with lines, caps and extension sets that we have not had training on, or have used before.   A common question we get is “What type of Catheter is it?” How do we know if it is a open ended catheter, groshong, non groshong, CT injectible or not?  Having a team of nurses and doctors who do the research and know how to identify these devices are becoming more valuable to the hospital and the patient.  Vascular Access Teams improve patient outcomes and patient satisfaction scores.
