Nurse and Physician bundles can decrease the time needed to place central lines, decrease costs associated with supplies and they can aide in decreasing CR-BSI’s in your facility. The CDC states in the 2011 Guidelines for the Prevention of Intravascular Catheter-Related Infections, that the inserter needs to use Maximum Sterile Barrier Precautions. This includes, cap, mask, sterile gown, sterile gloves and a full body drape. Having all the supplies in a bundle prevents the need to leave the bedside to gather extra supplies. Bundles can be customized with supplies that you want. Companies like Centurion Medical can create bundles with supplies that you use in your facility. You can create your own personal kit with extra items that do not come in standard PICC and CVC kits. We like to have 2 gowns, 3 masks and extra 4×4’s. It is common to have 2 staff members inserting lines. Anyone who is in the room needs to be masked, if you are assisting in insertion, you need to be wearing a mask, cap, gown and sterile gloves.
